Scope
Niras engaged us on behalf of the Peterhead Port Authority to conduct a full topographic survey of the quay structures and surrounding areas at NorSea base. The purpose of the survey was to generate highly accurate and detailed spatial data under strict survey control to support the design and planning of a quay extension construction project. The survey encompassed several zones, including the Smith Quay, the revetment, the rear access road and a cleared area at the northern end of the site. Particular attention was given to hard infrastructure elements such as deck levels, quay face geometry and selected substructure features. This level of precision was essential to provide a reliable foundation for future works.
Solution
To minimise disruption to operations, two experienced surveyors were onsite for one day. The most significant challenge was coordinating the survey during a window when both berths were inactive, as access to the quay face was required for data collection.
We implemented a multi-technology approach combining control established with total station, high-resolution terrestrial laser scanning, and drone-based photogrammetry to achieve the required accuracy and coverage. Additionally, a drone orthomosaic survey was conducted to capture detailed elevation data of the quay face and provide a visual record of the site. This integrated methodology ensured that all structural and environmental features were documented with exceptional clarity.
