Project Type
Topographic Survey
Location
Cairds Hill Wind Farm, Keith
Scope
We were instructed by EDP Renewables to carry out a topographic survey at Cairds Hill Wind Farm near Edintore in Keith. The purpose of the survey is to capture topographic and ground modelling survey data to aid in the design and construction of the wind farm. Our survey team carried out the works over the course of two site visits.
Solution
Using a combination of GNSS for ground control and UAV LiDAR for high resolution aerial mapping, ensured a high level of accuracy and efficient site coverage whilst minimising disruption to the site and environmentally sensitive areas.
Our team delivered an orthomosaic image of the site, plus the topographic survey data in 3D DWG and 2D pdf layout. We put down ‘permanent’ ground control to use GPS and total station survey methods. Due to the sensitive nature of the surrounding area, UAV was also chosen to ensure there was no ground disturbance or disruption to habitats. This meant we did not have to go into the forest which would have been difficult with the GPS due to signal issues from the vegetation. While UAV operations may not require formal consent, the proximity to sensitive habitats and areas of conservation were at the forefront of our operations.
Benefits
Using a drone reduced disruption to the site and mitigated environmental concerns while allowing our team to capture a rich dataset for planning use.
- Detailed accurate data for informed decision making
- Multiple deliverables from one dataset
