Project Type
Laser Scanning, Topographic Survey, Drone Survey, Bathymetric Survey, Utility Survey
Location
Isle of Jura, Scotland
Scope
We were instructed by Whyte & Mackay to carry out a multi deliverable project on the Isle of Jura. The client required terrestrial laser scanning of non-production and biomass areas, a full topographic survey of the site, a UAV roof survey, a reservoir topographic survey (including tracing of a water supply pipe) and a bathymetric survey of effluent discharge pipe.
Solution
To deliver complex multi-scope surveys efficiently, a team of three surveyors were deployed over several days. The approach combined advanced technologies and tested methodologies with different deliverables for each survey to suit client requirements;
- Topographic Survey: Conducted using GNSS (NRTK/RTK) and total station techniques. Control points were established with timber pegs or nails and verified through GNSS and traversing methods to ensure accuracy across the site. The deliverable for the full site and reservoir was a 3D DWG drawing.
- Laser Scanning: Terrestrial laser scanning captured detailed 3D data of non-production and biomass areas, supplemented by total station control for positional accuracy. The deliverable was a 3D Revit model and 2D DWG floor plans and orthomosaics suitable for engineering review and analysis.
- UAV Roof Survey: Drone technology was used for aerial inspection and mapping of roof structures. The deliverable was high resolution images.
- Utility Tracing: Water pipe routes were traced and marked in compliance with PAS128 standards, integrating data from manhole inspection, GPR, and EML surveys, all accurately located with NRTK GNSS to OS Grid and datum.
- Bathymetric Survey: A USV (Unmanned Surface Vessel) equipped with autopilot, RC control and a multi beam echo sounder performed effluent discharge pipe mapping and provided RTK corrections to OS Grid and datum. A control station ensured real-time monitoring of system performance and environmental conditions. The deliverable for this was also a 3D DWG drawing showing the pipe location and depth.
