UAV Roof Survey & Measured Building Survey

Scope
We were instructed by Macleod + Jordan to conduct a measured building survey combined with a UAV roof survey at Makro in Dunmurry, Belfast. The objective was to capture accurate spatial data for both the building interior and roof structure to support future design and planning activities. Due to the scale and complexity of the site, the project required a highly skilled surveyor to mobilise from our Aberdeen office, working on-site for two full days to ensure all required data was captured efficiently and to the highest standard.
Solution
To facilitate the transportation of sensitive surveying equipment, our surveyor travelled via ferry from Aberdeen to Belfast. Once on site, we started with the measured building survey using laser scanning and total station techniques. A series of high-resolution stationary scans were captured with the Trimble X7, providing precise geometric data of the building’s internal and external features.
Following completion of the terrestrial survey, we executed an extensive UAV operation using the Mini 4 drone equipped for photogrammetry. This aerial survey allowed us to capture detailed imagery of the roof structure, including hard-to-access areas, without the need for scaffolding or manual inspection. A photogrammetric model was created from the imagery captured which integrated seamlessly with our terrestrial scans.
The final deliverable was a structured point cloud, offering a rich, accurate dataset that integrates both terrestrial and aerial data. This holistic approach ensured the client received a unified model suitable for multiple downstream applications, including design, refurbishment planning, and asset management.
