Project Type
Drone Survey
Location
North Sea
Scope
We were instructed by AquaTerra to carry out an internal survey of ballast tanks within an FPSO, in the North Sea. The client required us to conduct an internal visual inspection of a tank, in order to determine the condition of the tank, without committing to any confined space entry or working at height.
Solution
Our teams opted for an Elios drone. This drone is designed for surveying inside structures and confined spaces where minor bumps with surfaces may occur. The UAV is equipped with a protective cage which protects vital components from damage.
By using this type of UAV we were able to minimise the length of exposure personnel received to confined space conditions and reduce the amount of equipment required for both survey and access. The drone was able to capture precise high resolution video and imagery of areas of interest with a light footprint on the area.
Working in conjunction with the clients OIE, data was transmitted in real time to a monitor onsite which allowed for a more targeted survey to be undertaken.
This job presented many challenges including confined space entry and working on an offshore installation which our experienced team handled professionally and safely.
The survey determined that no confined space entry was required to conduct NDT or repair works.
Benefits
Confined space UAVs provide a safe and cost-effective solution for surveying and completing visual inspections. When operated by skilled and qualified pilot and survey personnel, results are provided in a fraction of the time taken by traditional means.
- Reduced exposure to confined space risk
- Reduced exposure to working at height risk
- Data provided in real time for rapid decision making
- Comprehensive coverage of all areas
- Worked with AquaTerra to minimise the requirement for any internal NDT inspection
- Cost effective way to complete the scope of work
