Scope

We were instructed by BEAR to carry out a topographic survey at Scrabster where there is a section of the A9 with a long history of suffering from landslides. These land slip events result in debris being deposited onto the A9 trunk road on the approach to the harbour and ferry port.

Our client was considering various proposals for slope stability and rainwater runoff controls and therefore required detailed topographic survey information as well as high resolution imagery to aid in their design optioneering.

Solution

This was a difficult site for our team to access and survey safely, as it was located on a busy section of the A9, adjacent to the busy ferry port with a very steep hillside which rose approximately 45m above the road surface at a gradient of almost 1:1 in places.

Our surveyors overcame this challenge by using a combination of UAV LiDAR for detailed mass ground modelling data, safely and efficiently capturing the hillside and surrounding fields along with RTK-GNSS and Total Station survey techniques to capture road and hard surface details as well as establishing QAQC strings and ground control points.

Our client was delivered 3D CAD topographic plans, including a detailed ground surface model in the form of a triangulated surface, along with a high resolution LiDAR point cloud and orthomosaic imagery of the site.
