Project Type
Laser Scanning
Location
Ballater, Aberdeenshire
Scope
Spey Projects Ltd engaged us to perform a high-precision laser scanning survey of a designated room within the Royal Lochnagar Distillery in Ballater. The primary objective was to capture accurate spatial data and deliver a comprehensive 3D DWG model for design and planning purposes. This requirement was driven by the client’s need for precise dimensional information to support future works without repeated site visits.
Solution
To achieve this, our surveyor used the Trimble X7 laser scanner to generate a detailed colourised point cloud of the space. Following the fieldwork, our in-house CAD technician processed the point cloud data using advanced modelling software to create a highly accurate 3D DWG model. Files were submitted in .DXF format to suit a variety of software packages.
Benefits
We collected an accurate and complete dataset from the site in one day, allowing for a detailed model to be built for the client, while also minimising disruption to distillery operations.
- Complete and accurate dataset
- Efficient collection of information
- Enhanced accuracy based on survey technique and methodology
- Holistic
- Contextually rich point clouds
- No need for site revisit
The survey was conducted by our Commercial Manager Adam Veersema, who described it as his most memorable project of 2025. Adam shared: “Working in one of Scotland’s most iconic distilleries, located in the heart of the Balmoral estate, was an incredible experience. A true highlight of the year was getting an exclusive look behind the scenes of such a historic site.”
